Since it was founded in 1918, Sapim has focused exclusively on manufacturing bicycle spokes. Not exactly a great way to generate brand awareness, but it does mean that the company based in Wilrijk (NL) can offer its customers the best quality possible.
Last year Sapim produced over 100 million spokes for road bikes, city bikes, wheelchairs and sulkies (carts used for harness races). Their machines produce 120 spokes per minute. And while other factories do the same at a lower cost, Sapim also manufactures spokes manually - this craftsmanship is their key asset.
While we're throwing around numbers, you should know Sapim manufactures 5000 different types of spokes and customizes spokes according to its customers' wishes. Length, weight, color: they can all differ per customer.
Many cyclists have been successful thanks to Sapim spokes: big teams like Lotto, Quick.Step, Discovery Channel, T-Mobile and Rabobank use Sapim spokes in their wheels.
Sapim is on a quest to find the perfect spoke and works with the universities of Leuven and Ghent, spending countless hours researching ways to improve its product. And their efforts are paying off! Sapim has managed to develop spokes that are stronger as well as lighter. It’s a phenomenon that’s very interesting to the competition, but a secret that the company will of course never divulge.
